The cashier (shift manager) reacted with visible surprise when I asked for it black.

Initial warm-hot tentative sips tasted pretty bad. As the temperature decreased I found it less offensive, but what it had to offer was unpleasant. The nuttiness you describe is a generous assessment.

I haven't stepped into a McDonalds before this in at least a year and a half. I am not their target market. Heck, I make myself syphon brewed coffee at home every day with single origin beans.

The coffee tastes like it came from no where and is designed to be mixed with sugar and milk and the residual grease from their food offerings.

Though the crowd of seniors it brought to the McDonalds seemed pleased... I wonder how they would react to a taste of a syphoned cup.

Almost motivates me to try a guerrilla syphon brewing at a McDonalds...

In any case... Smooth? yes, its filtered well, but there is still some visible solids at the bottom of my cup. Nutty? Too far on the rancid/burnt nut side of nutty. Aroma? It made me laugh when I smelled it hot, and smelling the dried out remainder in my cup now is nothing like the smell of butterscotch I'm used to at home.

The initial smell made me take the first sips with a lot more trepidation, so I could have primed my senses for disappointment.

Strongly recommend only using this product as a degreaser.

There are several places in Van where you can get decent coffee.
Artigiano or 49th Parallel on 4th and Arbutus or other local roasters will be gazillion times better than McDonalds or Starbucks. Don't be fooled by "Premium", best coffee is fresh, roasted within 2 weeks by people who know how to do it...

I tried the new McDonald's coffee today and was delighted to get one for free. Their promotion ends on May 3rd. The coffee was very good with a nice aroma and full bodied smoothness. I would definitely drink it if I have the option the next time I a need a cup of coffee as you sure can't beat their prices.

[...] try it; there was a big push by McDonald’s here where they were giving away their free, new, premium roast coffee and I had zero interest in trying it. Personally, I’m all for a fast food tax that gets used [...]
