Help! Where to eat in San Francisco?

Golden_Gate-BridgeThere’s been a dearth of posts lately from me lately, but for a good reason. However, next week I’ll be on vacation to San Francisco, and am in desperate need of restaurant suggestions. So, dear readers, any personal food experiences worth sharing, or heard of any good eats in the city of love?

  1. Great city, have a good trip!

I’m not up on where to eat in San Francisco as I haven’t visited in awhile, but I’m sure they’re a mecca for foodies.

The only thing I would recommend is Boudin Bakery for their delicious sourdough bread and you can also order a decent clam chowder in a scooped out sourdough loaf. Also, asians love to bring back their famous almond cookies from Chinatown.

Guess you’ll have to do your research and report back.

Have a great foodie adventure. Wish I could come.

I did a lot of grazing and not a lot of sit-down meals. Definitely go to the Ferry Building especially on Saturdays when they have their farmer’s market. Tons of food-related shops; had oysters and a glass of rose at the oyster bar there and then had a macaron and cupcake at Miette for dessert. Dinner at Zuni Cafe. Make your way down to the Mission for fish tacos and have a pain au chocolat at Tartine. Do some wine tours of Napa/Sonoma. So lucky!!

  2. local favorites…

lers ros – delicious, authentic, thai eats – spicy!

turtle tower – northern style vietnamese pho – yummy broth

(both on larkin st. in the tenderloin)

ike’s sandwiches – daaaamn tasty subs

el farolito or el castillito – in the mission – for mission style burritos

brenda’s – french soul food – brunch deliciousness

hmmm that should get you started…have fun eating your way through our lovely city. good luck!

  3. Unless something magical happens money-wise, I too am going to San Francisco on my honeymoon this September. I was just there last summer. Okay, you HAVE to eat at Dottie’s True Blue Cafe (522 Jones). HAVE TO. We ate there twice in 3 days last year. The line ups are long, but it is so so good. It’s a breakfast place in the Tenderloin, a sketchy area, but don’t worry.

Cesilia is right on with her suggestions, especially the Ferry Building farmer’s market, and in the Mission also go to the Bi-Rite Creamery and check out the cool stores on Valencia St (especially 826 Valencia).

Oh, and In-N-Out Burger and Citizen Cake or Cupcake.

Obviously, I think it’s amazing there.

  4. thank you everyone!!!111111

looks like I have enough good suggestions to last through the week.

I hope to bring back some suggestions of my own when I return, along with a blog journal along the way :D

Swan’s Oyster Depot for no-frills, fresh raw oysters, clams, steamed crabs
BiRite Creamery in the Mission for ice cream (mmm… balsamic strawberry; lavender honey vanilla)
Delfina’s in the Mission (down the road from ice cream!) for Cali-Italian
Incanto in the Mission for reeeeeeally good rustic Italian with a nose-to-tail philosophy
Chez Panisse in Berkley for the original fresh farm-to-table approach

  5. This is awesome. Thanks readers!
Dan, make sure to finish your San Fran posts before I make my trip down a couple weeks afterwards. Muwahaha ;)
